Our text this week will be Genesis 29:31-30:24.
Jacob had heard his father, Isaac, speak this word of blessing over him:
“God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples (Genesis 28:3).”
And later, he had heard the voice of the Lord Himself confirm the same:
“Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth (Genesis 28:14).”
I think Jacob could hardly have imagined the drama and dysfunction that would unfold on the way to this promise being fulfilled. Four mothers, eleven sons, and one daughter later and he is well on his way, but what a mess!
Out of the ugliness of envy, rivalry, competition, animosity, polygamy, and superstition the Lord will continue to advance His sovereign and gracious plan to bless the world with a Savior.
Would you read through this passage and pray for your own heart AND for the hearts of your Grace brothers and sisters in preparation for this week’s gathered worship?
- “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Heb. 4:12).” Ask the Lord to do this sort of “heart surgery” in your heart this Sunday as you hear this passage preached.
- And please pray for Kenny Clark as he prepares to preach and for Caleb Parker as he prepares to lead us in sung worship.
