The condescension of the eternal Son of God, the One who is before all things and who holds all things together, is a mind-blowing miracle.
“Christ Jesus… though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men (Philippians 2:5–7).”
Born in the likeness of men. Of course, if the Son was going to “make peace by the blood of his cross (Colossians 1:20)” he would have to have blood to shed, which means his human life would have to begin just as ours did. In the womb. Being born.
Christmas magnifies just how low our Lord condescended. I love how Chris Rice captured this in his song Welcome to Our World.
Fragile finger sent to heal us
Tender brow prepared for thorn
Tiny heart whose blood will save us
Unto us is born
Or in the Sovereign Grace song, Who Would Have Dreamed?
Who would have dreamed or ever foreseen
That we could hold God in our hands?
The Giver of Life is born in the night
Revealing God’s glorious plan to save the world
Or the simple line in In Christ Alone,
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This Sunday Junior Jamreonvit will be preaching on the full humanity of Jesus from Philippians 2:5-8 (among other passages) and Kenny Clark will be leading our sung worship. Please pray for each as they prepare. And pray for our Grace family that we would “have this mind among ourselves” (Philippians 2:5) of humility and self-sacrificing love that reflects the love of our Savior Jesus.
See you Sunday, Grace. Come hungry!
