If you are a Christian, you’ve experienced it at some point. Maybe right now. You pray and it feels like the heavens are closed. God’s attention is elsewhere and you feel stuck. Where are you, God? Are you listening? Where do I go from here? I don’t see a way forward! Hello?

That’s where Asaph was at when he wrote Psalm 77.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.

In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying;
my soul refuses to be comforted.

When I remember God, I moan;
when I meditate, my spirit faints.

You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

How do we maintain forward movement in the direction of worshipful communion when it feels like all our prayer is just met with a “dial tone” from God? This beautiful Psalm of Asaph has the power to blow fresh wind of persevering hope into our prayer life and faith that, though we may feel unseen and see no way forward, God will make a way.

This Sunday, Jason Oakes will preach Psalm 77 and Kenny Clark will lead us in sung worship. Would you pray for us as we prepare? And to prepare your own heart, set aside some time to slowly and prayerfully meditate on Psalm 77. And reflect on times in your life, in the past or presently, when felt God seemed silent. Ask Him to use Psalm 77 this Sunday to preserve you and keep you moving in the direction of worshipful communion.

See you Sunday, Grace. Come hungry!
