We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of its guilt. He regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.

No wonder Jesus told his disciples, “I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)

Statements four and five have focused our attention on the person and work of Jesus Christ who has, once and for all, accomplished the gracious redeeming work that the Father purposed from eternity. Statement six turns to the role of the Holy Spirit in God’s redeeming work. And what we see is that all the Son accomplished is now applied through the ministry of the Holy Spirit – from first to last.

The Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck wrote, “Without application, redemption is not redemption.” And, “In his state of exaltation there still remains much for Christ to do.” In terms of redemption accomplished, Jesus said, “It is finished.” In terms of redemption applied, He said, “Go therefore and make disciples… I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Holy Spirit, living breath of God
