Preparing the Table

A favorite read in our house when our kids were younger was The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. The subtitle of the book is Every Story Whispers His Name, inspired by Jesus’ words to the Emmaus road disciples in Luke 24:44, “everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” All scripture points (forward or backward) to Jesus. Sometimes with whispers. Sometimes with loud shouts.

We are kicking off a preaching series of a different sort this week: Everything Written About Me. What’s different about this series is that it isn’t coming all at once. From time to time will dedicate a Sunday to preach the message of an entire book of the Bible in one sermon to help us see its big picture and how it contributes to the full story of God’s redemption through Jesus.

This Sunday, Fred Sanders will trace the message of First John through its two great declarations, “God is light” and “God is love.” We’ll see how these aspects of God’s character are most clearly revealed through Christ and ought to mark the lives of those who truly know Him, as we walk in His light and in His love.

At a reasonable pace, it would probably take 15-20 minutes to read the entire Epistle of First John at one sitting. I encourage you to spend some time reading and meditating on this short but concentrated book in preparation for our gathered worship this week.

See you Sunday, Grace. Come hungry!

SONG OF THE WEEK

Light of the Lord by Songs of Grace

All around us is darkness, the blackest of night
Yet we’ve been adopted as children of light
No more delay, we will walk in His way
In the light of the Lord
Father, we pray, “Help us walk in Your way
in the light of the Lord.”
