Preparing the Table

Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!

Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!

For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods. (Psalm 96:1-4)

To declare the marvelous works of God is to declare His glory. His works proclaim His name, display His greatness, and demand His praise. The marvelous works of God in Exodus 1-18 were for this very purpose. He told Pharaoh as much in the midst of the plagues.

“For this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” (Exodus 9:16)

And as we come to Exodus 18, we find that the stories of God’s marvelous works have run ahead of Moses and the people of Israel. His father-in-law has heard secondhand of all that God had done for them in Egypt, and now as they are reunited and he hears the stories from Moses himself, this priest of Midian rejoices and blesses the LORD as the One who is “greater than all gods.”

We have a greater story to tell than Moses did. We know the story of the true and greater deliverance that Jesus accomplished through his life and death and resurrection. And have been entrusted with the mission to keep telling this old, old story so that the nations might be glad and sing for joy (Psalm 67:4).

This Sunday, Kenny Clark will preach from Exodus 18:1-12 and Caleb Bilti will lead our sung worship. Would you pray for them this week as they prepare? And as we conclude our series in part one of Exodus and prepare for our reflection service the following Sunday, let’s ask the Lord to remind us of all that we’ve seen and learned and how His word has been at work in our hearts and minds.

See you Sunday, Grace. Come hungry!

SONG OF THE WEEK

Rise with the Sun by CityAlight

There’s a song that’s sung through the nations
Of joyful thanks to the king
Where the countless saints who are rescued
Praise Jesus who set them all free

Rise with the sun
Lift up his name
All through the earth
We sing out his praise
East to the west
Night to the day
Join in the song
And sing out his praise
